I received income for 2017 after the filing deadline. Can I report in 2018, or do I need to amend my 2017 return?

I get annual income from a trust reported on a Schedule K-1 Form 1041. My 2017 check and form did not arrive until after last year's filing deadline, but it was filed by the trust under 2017. Can I simply add this to my 2018 return, or do I need to file an amended 2017 return, even though I didn't actually receive the income/form until after the filing deadline?

" do I need to file an amended 2017 return..."

You need to amend (if that makes a difference in your 2017 return, which it most likely will). The tax year on the K-1 controls in this instance rather than when you actually received the income or the form.
