i received a refund $1500 less than i was expected to get back.

Ive called the IRS and i don't owe anything, i paid my service fee for turbotax. I've called turbotax with nothing but an automated system to help. i see that others are having this problem as well, what do i need to do to receive the rest of my tax refund.

thank you in advance.

Does the IRS website indicate that you were sent less than what was reported on your federal tax return Form 1040 Line 34? - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

If so, you will need to wait for the IRS to send you a letter which will have the changes the IRS made to the return which changed the refund. If you disagree with the IRS there will be a procedure in the letter to dispute the IRS changes.

If not, and you requested to have the TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund, then you will need to contact the third party processor for the status of your tax refund, Santa Barbara Tax Product Group, using their website - https://www.sbtpg.com/

Only the IRS can tell you why they adjusted your tax return.   If they did adjust it for any reason, you will receive a letter that explains WHY they adjusted it.   It usually takes about 3 weeks to get the explanatory letter.   For more information regarding the possible reasons why it was adjusted (we don't know for sure) please see the following help pages from TurboTax and the IRS.

Why is my refund direct-deposit or check lower than the amount in TurboTax?

Why is my refund received different from what I filed - IRS

This happened to me, too!

According to this article:

https://www.freep.com/story/money/personal-finance/susan-tompor/2022/03/09/income-tax-refunds-smaller-for-some/[phone number removed]/

"The advance child tax credit put money into wallets in 2021. Now, many people don't realize the money was an "advance" of an expanded credit for 2021."

I have one child, so six months times $250 = $1,500.

I got this message from the IRS:

We changed the refundable Child Tax Credit amount claimed on your tax return because there was an error on Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents, in one of the following:

  • The computation of the credit on Schedule 8812 was incorrect.
  • The amount on Schedule 8812 was not transferred correctly to your tax return.
  • You received advance Child Tax Credit payments but did not reconcile them or you reconciled them incorrectly

Seems like TurboTax would have caught this!  :(

When you went through the Child Tax Credit, you did not enter the $1500 of Advance Payments.   TurboTax has no way of knowing what payments you received; we ask.   You can't e-file a return without answering those questions first.    You would have received Letter 6419 with the amounts.     If you filed a return claiming the full amount of the Child Tax Credit, you did not enter your advance payments.    Since the advance was not entered, you claimed the full amount of the credit.   But since the IRS knows you got the payments, they adjusted your refund.   @AFields

Well, yes I understand that TurboTax doesn't know what income I've received.  I just meant that the instructions weren't clear.

In this public forum, we cannot diagnose why your refund has been reduced.  For additional information, please see this Help Article or this TurboTax blog post.
