@frankbaldwin53 You need to enter the amount from your letter 6475 in the Federal Review section for the recovery rebate credit.    That letter tells you how much you received for the 3td EIP payment.   You cannot get that payment twice, so you have to enter the amount you received.   If you do not enter it, or enter an incorrect amount, it will delay your refund.

@jpgeeee You mentioned getting the advance child tax credit payments---you should have entered the amount from your letter 6419 for the advance payments, and if you also received the 3rd stimulus payments you needed to enter the amount from letter 6475.   If you did not enter those amounts, or if you entered incorrect amounts, the IRS will catch the mistake but your refund will be delayed.

Yes, you need to report the amount you received for the third stimulus (2021 Economic Impact Payment) on your tax return. You enter it in the Federal Review section.

In TurboTax Online, please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off
  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen
  3. On the next page titled Did you [or your spouse] get a third stimulus payment?, answer Yes or No
  4. Follow the interview and answer all questions
  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

I am using the PC version of Turbo Tax this year (not the on-line version) and I cannot find anywhere to enter the information from Letter 6475 - Economic Impact Payments.  I do not receive the question: Did you [or your spouse] get a third stimulus payment? after clicking on Federal Review.  What do I do in this case?

If your Adjusted Gross Income on the 2021 tax return for your filing status is more than the maximum allowed for the Recovery Rebate Credit the question for the stimulus will not be presented.

• Single or married filing separately—$80,000
• Married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er)—$160,000
• Head of household—$120,000

With the answer above, that means no need (actually no way) to enter the amount listed in the Letter 6475. And can go e-file with the 2021 tax return without it?  Can IRS get your 3rd stimulus money back if your AGI of  2021 if more than $80K?

Right.  You don't need to enter the 6475 amounts.   And you don't need to pay it back.  Yes you can efile.

If you received the 3rd EIP payment already based on your 2020 tax return you do not have to pay it back even if your 2021 income is higher.   If you did not receive it yet, the amount you can receive as a recovery rebate credit is based ONLY on your 2021 income---so if that income is too high you might receive a phased out amount or maybe no EIP at all.

Super! Thanks you all for your replies that make me comfortable to e-file my 2021 tax return!!!

How do I revisit this question if I answered incorrectly?  I said No, when the answer should have been yes to letter 6475.

To get to the stimulus questions in TurboTax at any time, you can search for stimulus or recovery rebate credit then hit ENTER and there should be a Jump to link

If you are trying to trigger it,
Click on Other Tax Situations at top
Click on Let's get started
Answer some questions then Continue
Then click on Let's keep going
Next screen is for the Third Stimulus, if you qualify

If you have not yet filed your return you can use the magnifying glass icon to search "Recovery Rebate Credit" to revisit the area.

If you have already filed, you don't need to do anything.  The IRS will adjust your return based on their information that created the letter.  If you are due a refund it may be delayed a bit more.  If you will now owe, you can make your payment on your online account or print 1040-V to print a coupon and mail your payment with the instructions on the form.
