You need to amend your return to add the Form 8938. Here is an excerpt from the IRS Basic Questions and Answers on Form 8938: "If you omitted Form 8938 when you filed your income tax return, you should file Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, with your Form 8938 attached."
Note: Your amended return must be mailed to the IRS (you cannot e-file it.)
Once you start amending the return following the instructions in the FAQ below, you can create the Form 8938.
Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function and the "Jump to" link (instead of "Tax Tools") to search for the topic.
@firsttimeever#1 I edited the answer above to correct a typo.
Hi, I find it more convenient to fill out 8938 manually outside the software and then file it together with rest of the return (1040, schedules, etc). The header of form 8938 (right in the top center) asks for the calendar year or tax year the form is being filed for. What would the that (calendar year) be for most filers? If I am filing the return in March 2018 (for income year 2017), would I list the CALENDAR year as 2017?
@rayjackray Yes, if like most taxpayers you follow the calendar year (January 1 - December 31) you would enter the calendar year as 2017. You can see the instructions for the form for more information: https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i8938.
how do you attach a form to your return in Turbotax? (and still e-file)
