I'm asked to provide my EIN. This includes a letter in the beginning but the form only allows numbers. What am I supposed to do?

An EIN is always in the following format. XX-XXXXXXX and never has letters. You may be looking at a control number or your employer may have made a mistake.

While this is generally true, dealing with taxes always includes exceptions. Governmental entities often have the EIN followed by a letter. To say it never has letters, would not be correct.

I'm doing my daughter's taxes for her. The EIN has a W at the end and the program won't accept it. What should I do?

An EIN is a nine-digit number.   No letters.
