I'm amending my 2019 return and my refund monitor for Federal didn't change to $0. States are $0 but Federal shows an amount higher than the amount I originally paid.

I haven't changed anything yet and the Federal tax due already shows an amount higher than paid.

Since you owed it could be the increased underpayment penalty which you can ignore ... switch to the FORMS mode and look at the 1040X ... if there are no changes in column B then you are OK to continue with the corrections.

Before you selected to AMEND, did you start with a return that showed exactly what you filed with the IRS (original return) ?

wasn't 2019 a tax year that the IRS made a really late change to one of their forms...like in mid-March?  Or was it 2018?  I remember because I filed earlier and would have changed my taxes, in my case, by something like $12 owed.   In some cases, the IRS didn't want a bunch of amended tax returns for that one item, but don't recall under what circumstances...I didn't do anything about it myself

IF one filed before that change, the updated forms might then show an immediate $$ amount at the start of an amended tax return.

Nahh.......I checked back, and that particular one was for 2018 taxes, not 2019.

Still, if any of the forms you initially filed with, were later updated with some minor change....that could also be the reason you see a  non-zero in Fed tax when you start an amended tax return.

Unsure at this time if the TT system will ever allow the efiling of amended returns after the close of that tax season ... I know professional programs can but since there is no precedent with DIY programs we will have to wait and see.
