I just received my W-2 for employment of 2021, and need to add the income to my federal return, but it says my return is already filed. How do I add the income?

In December I received an email stating I could fill out information on my federal tax return to get a head start before my W-2 came in and I could add the income later. But now it's saying I already filed my federal return and I can't add the income.

It would have been impossible to e-file your 2021 return in December.   Click on Add a State to get back in to your 2021 return so that you can add your W-2 and continue working.   You do not really have to add a state---that just lets you back in to the return.

I am only 20 so I don't know alot when it comes to filing taxes so turbo tax made it easy, but when I went in to update my address it allowed me to put in other information too. At some point it asked for a W-2 but I didnt have it yet so i put 0 amount on each section because the page said i could go back and change or add income when my W-2 did eventually come in.

Click edit on the W-2 that you put all those zeros in for----or just delete it and start over.   Next time do not enter a bunch of zeros....

In the federal section, go to Income, then to wages. There should be an edit or update button to click.

A Control Number (box D) is used by many payroll departments to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system. If your W-2 doesn't have one, it's no big deal.

If you get errors when attempting to e-file with an empty box D, just enter any number in this format: 5 digits, space, 5 digits (for

example 12345 67890). The IRS doesn't care what's in box D.

If you get errors when attempting to import your W-2 with an empty box D, select Skip import and manually enter your W-2. You won't be able to import using the above solution for e-filing.
