I just got my tax return using Turbo Tax. Then I realized that I am non-resident alien (1st year) in the States. What should I do with my file and the money?

I already got the tax return last week and my friend told me that we are not allowed to use turbotax to e-file if we are non-resident alien. Can you advise how I should amend my application and what action should I take to resubmit my files? It's quite urgent and thanks a lot!

You just need to amend your Form 1040 to Form 1040NR.

Here are the steps:

You would need to submit both the Form 1040-X and Form 1040NR together:

  1. Download the Form 1040-X from the IRS website (see below).  On the front page of Form 1040-X, enter your name, current address, and social security number (SSN) or IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)
  2. Do not enter any other information on page 1.
  3. Do not complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.
  4. Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.
  5. Complete a new or corrected Form 1040-NR.  As TurboTax does not support nonresident forms, click here Sprintax.
  6. Across the top of Form 1040-NR, write “Amended”
  7. Attach the new or corrected return (Form 1040NR) to the back of Form 1040-X.

Since I used Turbo tax to submit my original tax return, can I get my payment back then? I have already used Sprintax to get my 1040-NR.

Do I need a physical address instead of a PO box when filing my amended tax return to IRS Austin? Do I need file with my original return as well? Besides, what should I prepare to amend my state tax return? I am in Missouri. Thanks!
