I just filed 2021 taxes taking itemized deduction, not realizing my husband took the standard deduction. Can/should I amend my return to protect him from a big tax bill?

We filed married/filing separately. The difference in the return  for me was small between standard and itemized. As I understand this, this will make his standard deduction 0, and I'd expect the irs to come after his refund and any additional tax he might owe. It would be better for me to amend and pay a little then for him to pay alot.

Yes, you can amend and take the standard deduction. Since you filed separately and itemized, he is not entitled to the standard deduction, but he could itemize if he had sufficient deductions.
