You cannot add or change, or retrieve a return that has been filed, even if it is in progress.  The IRS has not given any instructions for tax payers who put in the wrong Recovery Rebate Credit, or receive the stimulus money after they filed.  The IRS may adjust your return, if they do they will send you a letter.  For now, just wait & see.

@Danm3838 I am in the same situation and where’s my refund still says your refund it still processing but I checked my transcripts this morning and they have a issue date for 3/17! They adjusted the amount and are depositing the amount I should actually get. I wouldn’t amend them!

I amended the tax return in TurboTax (downloaded/CD) it doesn't allow me to re-efile and when I print it, the first page still shows the original refund, which is not what is appearing after the amendment.

Am I supposed to mail this in even though the first page is incorrect for the refund?  Are we just supposed to continue to wait and see if the government will catch return and correct the refund?

Thanks

Tami

@tbl1944

What is happening with these is that the IRS is adjusting them.  It will delay your refund while they go through their necessary steps to confirm the conflict in their data and your return. There really isn't a good way to know how long it may take, though.

I'm in the same boat.  I originally owed tax and now I owe more and got the letter from the IRS.  I had set up for Auto Draft on 4/14/21.  Will the IRS withdraw the correct higher amount or do I need to take other action?

The IRS will not correct the amount automatically.  You can make payments through the IRS website. The best place to start is to look in your IRS tax account.  It's good to use it because it gives you access to a lot of information that previously was quite difficult and time consuming to access.

Online Account is an online system that allows you to securely access your individual account information.  You can view:

  • The amount you owe, updated for the current calendar day
  • Your balance details by year
  • Your payment history and any scheduled or pending payments
  • Key information from your most recent tax return
  • Payment plan details, if you have one
  • Digital copies of select notices from the IRS
  • Your Economic Impact Payments (EIP 1 and EIP 2), if any

You can also:

  • Make a payment online
  • See payment plan options and request a plan via Online Payment Agreement
  • Access your tax records via Get Transcript

Here is the link to see your Online Tax Account.

What? They literally corrected my refund they took the stimulus out and just sent me the rest of my total.

Correct.  Under the CARES Act, if there is a tax arrear, the IRS can take the difference from the stimulus check.
