I got a Notice 5071C from the IRS last week after filing my 2023 return April 10th. Anyone know what to expect? Also Turbo Tax is telling me I didn’t get any refund…?

I filed using the online filing option for mobile devices and claimed education costs and had no income basically the entire year just full time student.  I’ve been receiving emails from Turbo Tax billing me for $144 (whaaattt it was supposed to be like $30 or $40 what happened there, why’d it tack on a bunch of premium services I never asked for nor want?!) because it says I haven’t been given the expected refund.  Is this just because the IRS is delaying my refund, apparently needing to verify my identity prior to approval?  So confused this year:/

Are the fees supposed to come out of your refund?

If the IRS is taking too long to send your refund you still have to pay the fees in time.  After 36 days after your original estimated refund date.

See What if the IRS reduces your refund or delays it.

Then when the IRS does send your refund they won't take the fees out again.

And, Why you got charged,

How to review your fees.  And there is a Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California).
