I got a letter from the irs saying I didn’t file my state taxes for 2016 but I paid for federal and state and thought I did them together. Can I review the state?

Did not file your state return, or did not PAY state tax due?  You cannot pay state tax due from a federal refund, if you thought you could.  Most states want you to pay directly on the state's tax website or by mailing in a check or money order.  Check your bank/credit card records to see if you paid the state.

Open TT 2016 and load your return. Most likely it will open automatically. Click the "Forms" button on the ribbon. You will be presented all the tax forms and worksheets. You should be able to find the state return form. If you can't find it there, you did not file it. You can file an extension and pay for state income tax without completing the state tax form.
