I forgot about a source of income when I filed my taxes. How do I amend?

I recently received another document from another source of income that I forgot to include when I filed my taxes and I've already received my refund.  How do I amend?

If, after you file, you realize you made an error on your tax return, you may need to file an “Amended return” using Form 1040X.

“The IRS may correct mathematical or clerical errors on a return and may accept returns without certain required forms or schedules. In these instances, there's no need to amend your return. However, do file an amended return if there's a change in your filing status, income, deductions, or credits. “

If possible, before filing an amended return, wait until the original return has been processed.

Filing the 1040X before the original is processed can cause confusion since they might cross one-another in the system.

Additionally, it is possible that the IRS will notice the error on your original return. If this happens, they may correct the return and send you a letter explaining their changes. You will have the option of accepting the corrected return, or objecting to the changes the IRS made.

Remember; to avoid penalties and interest, pay the tax due before the due date.
