I filed taxes as an independent, marked no one can claim me as an independent, but found out someone claimed me as a dependent

My taxes were filed and accepted by the IRS three days ago. On one of the questions, I marked that no one could claim me as a dependent.

Yesterday, my sister tells me that she claimed me as a dependent on her taxes.  I am okay with her claiming me as a dependent, but I did not know in advance.

How will the IRS process our taxes?

the question is not who claimed you but who was legally entitled to claim you.

your sister's return should be rejected if she filed after you because you claimed yourself. if she filed before you, your return should have been rejected because she claimed you

because of the relationship between you and your sister, you must qualify as her qualifying relative for her to be able to claim you.

you would be her qualifying relative if all these tests are met

  • Your gross income for 2021 was less than $4,300
  • she provided over ½ your support
  • you aren't a qualifying child of another taxpayer
