I filed return under nickname. Do I need to do an amended return?

I filed a return for a friend of mine, and I did not realize until after the returned was filed and I printed out the copy that I had used my friends nickname of Kasey instead of her given name of Kristen.  Will I have to file an amended return, or should I wait until the IRS or State rejects the return due to the wrong name?  All the other information is correct on the return.

If you have already e-filed your return then it is too late. Once you transmit your return you cannot change it or get it back. You would have to wait until your return gets rejected or accepted.  If rejected, you can make your changes or add information to your return. If accepted, you would need to amend your return to correct or add information to your return.

The IRS only verifies the first five letters of your last name, with your social security number, so If the first five letters were correct then it may be accepted. If it is rejected then you can go back in and correct this information. If your return is Accepted then you can Amend your return so that it shows the correct first name.
