I completed my taxes on 1/30/18, on 1/30/18 they were accepted. Today (2/1/18), I was told by a friend i needed to add my 1098-T form. So, I logged in and went to the amend option and it popped up a message that this years instructions were not posted. So I hit continue and it proceeded to take my through my return as if I was refiling, so I added my 1098-T form and my refund amount went up. I then printed out my updated return. Well, I went back to my TurboTax Dashboard and it is still showing the old refund amount information. This is where I became confused, because according to the forum on here you cannot amend your taxes online and this years amend instructions are not even out. So, did I amend my taxes or update them? Does the IRS have my updated information, I mean I printed out my new return when I was prompted to at the end when I submitted my update. But if I try to print my return from my dashboard it still has the old one. Also, I received a different email this time, last time I got, "Congratulations your refund is on it's way to the IRS..." this time the email I received was "Hi there, we're confirming that your 2017 tax return was accessed" so does that mean I just updated it and they have the new information and I'm good or do I need to contact the IRS? I hope this makes some what of sense and someone can help me! *Edit: All my TurboTax says is: Federal Return Transmitted: 1/30/18, Federal Return accepted 1/30/18. It doesn't say anything about being approved yet, I'm not sure if that will change the answer to my question or not. Thanks!
You did not amend your return, and only the first return transmitted was sent to IRS, as you can only e-file one return in the online program.
You need to:
Wait for the original return to be processed and you get your refund (and keep it).
Change the file back to what it was originally filed as.
Then you will file an Amended return and the refund will show as the additional amount you get when the 1098T is added.
Mail the Amended return to IRS.
