I just filed my taxes and I claimed both my children dependents and I noticed that I did not receive the child tax credit. I do not understand why since both children meet the qualifications: under age, have lived with me the entire year, are both solely supported by me, and cannot be claimed by anyone else.

There are TWO places where you need to look on your Form 1040 for the child tax credit:

Child tax credit line 12a

Additional Child Tax Credit line 17b   (schedule 8812)

Ok, but why would it go on line 17b instead of 12?

Some of the child tax credit can only be used to offset your tax liability down to zero.  The refundable part goes on line 17b.  That is the part that gets added to your refund.
