I filed and owed $827, got a corrected form Amended, now I'm due $906.

I owed $827 when I filed for 2022. Then I got a very late corrected form from my brokerage. After amending the return, I am now due a refund of $906 (a difference of $79 refund). How do I handle it? Pay the $827, then wait 20 weeks for the $906 refund?

That's one way.

If you pay $79 now, you may get a bill from IRS.

you can respond to that saying you already filed an amended return.

Actually I'm due a net refund of $79, not owe $79.

That's why I don't know what to do. Pay $827 now and wait months for the $906 refund? (Net $79 refund)

Or pay nothing, file the amended taxes, and if the IRS can do math, get $79 back?

sorry I had my plus/minus signs wrong.

whatever amount shows as paid on 1040-X line 16, you should pay to be consistent with that.

Otherwise, you are filing an incorrect 1040-X

if you  don't want to pay, change Line 16 to zero and re-compute.

If you do that, you may get a 1040 bill from IRS. because 1040-X can take a long time to go through.
