If receiving no status from the IRS amended return website - https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

You will need to wait 16 weeks from the time the amended return was mailed before the IRS will talk to you about the return that was mailed.  See this IRS website for amended return FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/filing/amended-return-frequently-asked-questions

Will calling the IRS help me get my amended return processed any faster?

Calling us will not speed up the processing time of your amended return. Our phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your amended return 16 weeks or more after you’ve mailed it; or if  Where's My Amended Return?  itself has directed you to contact us.

You didn’t actually say.....but did you print and mail it?  A lot of people don’t realize you have to mail it yourself and can’t efile it.

Yes I did fill it out and send it, along with copies of my Turbox Tax done online. No way to contact them.

What do you mean copies of Turbo Tax Online?  You only mail the 1040X not your original return.  While I’m asking you questions,  did they first process your original return?  You are suppose to wait to amend until you get the first refund.  Is this for 2017 or a prior year?

Thank you. Yes, I sent in my first one, and it was a mess. IRS accepted it and sent me a return of 755.00. I immediately sent them a 1040x with copies of my TurboTax return, which was very nicely done. All via mail route. I sent the info out on 2/28/2018..Yes 2017 year . I'm stuck as I don't know who to contact at the IRS about this issue.

if you follow the Instructions for form 1040X carefully and file it correctly your amendment will be processed promptly,
As per the instructions, if you do not include required forms, your amendment may be returned to you

I had my ammended return done by a tax professional and everything was in order and signed before I certified mailed it in, its still not in the irs system it states that it takes three weeks to show up in the irs system and could take up to 16 weeks to process, I called the irs and the lady said that I needed to wait 16 weeks before they will havr any info on it and then an additional 16 to process and when I confronted her on it taking three weeks to show in the irs system she said maybe her information is wrong and put me on hold and then came back and said I can use the where is my ammended return tool and i told her I did and it advised me to call thr 1800 number and dial extension 652 and she said you will have to call back later. Its getting to be a joke first I get audited and then they allow me to ammend my return and its gonna be 2 yrs before I get it back

I filed a 2019 amended return in Sept 2020. It did not post to the IRS amended status web until Feb 2021. It now shows it was received Oct 22 2020 but not yet processed. Don't know what the issue is with amended returns. Tried to call the number listed on the site, but after a standard message and a 20 minute wait, a real person person answered and provided me with her badge number.  Then I was told to stay on the line a minute and was put on hold. After holding for 10 minutes the standard message was replayed and a 30 minute wait time was stated. I hung up. Just a note. Starting with 2019 taxes, an amended return can be filed online. I did that prior to mailing it in, and it was accepted by Turbotax but rejected by the IRS. No explanation was given and no number was listed to call, so I gave up on that and mailed it. Just my experience with the amended return system.

It's been 10 months since I mailed my amended return.  I tracked to return and they did receive it.  I check every day (IRS site where's my amended return)  nothing yet.  Is it because of COVID?

We have heard from others that their amended returns have taken MUCH longer than the "normal" four months.   The IRS is severely backlogged for a variety of reasons including the pandemic, stimulus checks,  and recent tax law changes in the middle of the tax season.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:
