I filed an amended 2023 return last spring. Months later, the system said a letter had been sent to me, but I never got it. No one at the IRS has info. What to do?

I filed the amended 2023 return in March of 2024, after the initial tax return completed processing. In June, I called the IRS to check the status and was told a determination regarding the refund had been made in May and a letter had been sent, but I had received nothing. The person on the phone said there was some kind of system problem and she couldn't see any information, and I should call back another day. In August - same message from the automated assistance about the determination in May followed by a letter having been sent, same story from the person on the phone about not being able to see any information in the system. In November, the same thing happened, and I got the same story from the person on the phone, and so I asked if I should just re-submit the amended return. The IRS representative said I should do that. First, does this sound like the right thing to do? And second - how would I do that, since the IRS system is telling me the amended return has already been reviewed? Very puzzled - and grateful for any advice you may have!

They are still processing the return if it has been received and is not yet on the account transcript.

Here's the IRS's 'Where's my amended return?' tool.  Try using that as well.

No, if you have already filed an amended return and it is processing with the IRS, I would not recommend submitting another return as this could cause confusion and delays on processing the return.  You can view your account transcript to see if status of your amended return.  To view your account transcript with the IRS, see the link below:

Thank you so much! I wasn't aware I could view transcripts and that was super helpful. What's interesting is that I see they received the return in March 2024 but the dollar value shown as amount due or refunded is $0, even though the amended should have generated a $777 federal refund. (I will note that it also generated a few hundred dollars due to the state, which I did file and pay at the same time I filed for the federal refund.) Any idea what would cause that? Thank you!

There could have been changes made to the return by the IRS or the amended return may not be fully processed.  You can verify the return on file with the IRS by reviewing the tax return transcript.  You will access the tax return transcript the same way you did the account transcript.  See the link below:

Thank you!! What does it mean when the Account Transcript shows they received the amended return in March of 2024 but the list of Return Transcripts doesn't include the amended return? Are they still looking at it?

Thanks so much!

Thank you very much! I'll give it another twelve months or so before I check again. 😀 Have a great day!
