I filed 1040 by accident and I was supposed to file 1040nr how do I return money

I am an international student and I sent the wrong form 1040, I received refund money as a result. I found out I have to file 1040NR along with a form 1040X. What should I do with the money I got from filing form 1040? Do I include it as a check, how do I pay it back to the IRS?

Yes, if your new refund using Form 1040NR is lower than the refund already received then you will have to send the money back toe the IRS when you file the corrected return. You can attach a check. Please see IRS Pay by Check or Money Order for more details.

Please use the steps below to file the correct return. Do not use 1040X in sprintax since you did not use them to file the original return.

Download Form 1040X
Enter your name, current address, and social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) on the front of Form 1040X.
Don’t enter any other information on page 1. Also, don’t complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.
Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.
Complete a new or corrected return ( Form 1040NR, etc. you can try to use sprintax for this).
Across the top of the new or corrected return, write “Amended.”
Attach the new or corrected return to the back of Form 1040X.
