I didn't receive a letter from IRS saying form 8862 is required. Yet turbotax asks me to fill it out. Should I choose, "We don't want to claim Add. CTC this year?"

I keep receiving the notice (on the review) that I must add the children's names, etc. (on form 8862) and when I return to the "uncommon situations" page (under Deductions and Credits, CTC) the box that "[we] got a notice from the IRS..." is checked. It checks is by itself.

Per IRS:

Taxpayers complete Form 8862 and attach it to their tax return if:

  • Their earned income credit (EIC), child tax credit (CTC)/additional child tax credit (ACTC), credit for other dependents (ODC) or American opportunity credit (AOTC) was reduced or disallowed for any reason other than a math or clerical error.
  • They want to take the credit(s) and meet all the requirements.

If that doesn't apply to you, delete the form:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.
