The most common reasons you would not see money back for claiming your kids is:

  • You did not have earned income from work as an employee on a W2 or income from self-employment
  • The income you earned was less than $2,500.  This would make you ineligible for the Child Tax Credit
  • Your income was too high to be eligible for the EIC or Child Tax Credit.  These are the only credits for children.
  • You actually did receive it and it was already calculated in your income
    • Look at your 1040 lines 12 and 17.  This is where you will see the common Credits for children
    • To see your 1040 click Tools>>.Tax Tools>>>View Tax Summary>>>Preview My 1040.
  • One of your answers caused your children to not be eligible dependents
    • Did they live with you MORE than 6 months
    • Revisit all of your answers to be sure they are accurate by clicking MY INFO then Edit next to their name.
