I amended my tax return, and got the check before the amended return was submitted. What do i do with the first check?

So i filed my tax return and submitted it, but then to realize that I forgot a form so I had to amend it and send in my information via mail. I recently got my fist checks from my tax reform back, but no news about my amended return. So do I keep the checks or do I send them back?

You should keep the check from your original return.  The amended return accounts for this refund and calculates only the change.  If you had an additional refund, that will be disbursed to you.  If you had a balance owed on the amendment, you should have mailed a check with the form.

The IRS can take up to 16 weeks to process an amended return.

So I didn't owe any money, but my refund was larger after I amended it. so I can just cash in these checks and they will account for it?

Just clarifying, and thank you so much!

If you amended your return using TurboTax and Form 1040X, your original refund would have been accounted for and only the change would have been reported on the amended return.  You should only receive the difference.

Yes, you can cash the checks.
