I amended my return, do I owe money back or am I getting more back?

On the 1040x form for my amended return, is the amount I want refunded to me my new total for my taxes, or is it the amount I'm getting back in addition to what my original return gave me? My original return is more than the "amount I want refunded to me" on the 1040x, so do I owe them some back?

In addition to what your original return gave you. You can check this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 22 should be your additional refund. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20

You will still get the first refund or need to pay the original tax due, once approved by the IRS.  Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.
