I am filing the CA Tax refund. Turbotax already filled the boxes, however I didn't receive 1099G this year. I don't understand where to find the info.

Sounds like you are asking about a 1099G for a state refund you got last year.   A State Tax Refund is taxable if you itemized deductions on that prior year's federal return and took a deduction for state income taxes instead of the sales tax. You got a deduction benefit for it so now you have to include it as income. If you took the Standard Deduction it is not taxable and you don't need to report it. Check your 1040 line 12 to see which deduction you took.

As VolvoGirl mentioned, the Form 1099-G is used to report your prior-year state refund.  If you haven't received your 1099-G and TurboTax has already filled the boxes for you is probably because you filed your 2023 tax return with TurboTax and the program is carrying the information forward.

If on your 2023 tax return the following three conditions are true, your refund counts as taxable income in your 2024 return:

  • You itemized deductions last year
  • You claimed state and local income taxes
  • You got a deduction in your federal return

TurboTax will calculate if all of the prior state refund or some will be taxable.

Do I need to report the state or local refund I got last year? Is it taxable?

Where do I enter a 1099-G for a state or local tax refund?
