Did you not include the tuition and fees deduction on your original tax return? A tuition and fees deduction can't be entered using the Free Edition because it requires another form in addition to form 1040. You will have to upgrade to Deluxe to use TurboTax.

if you have tuition and fees, why do you think your mother wrongly claimed you as a dependent?

if your mother wrongly claimed , it's your MOTHER that has to amend. there is nothing for you to do.

can you please explain more of your situation before spending your time with the tax forms?

how old are you? in school full time? working? make more or less than $4200?  who provides more than 50% of your financial support ( rent, food, utilities, transportation / car, medical, insurance, college costs)?

Sorry I was limited in what I could type.

I was 22 in 2019 and a full time student. My mother did not pay any of my bills for school or housing. I made almost 8k last year. My father helped pay for tuition but I paid all housing/utilities in my name. My parents are legally divorced and have been for years and my father did not claim me as a dependent.

I did include the tuition and fees on my previous return. That is why I am confused. However, I am amending my return to say that I am filing as an independent. I wasn't clear on everything and am fairly new to this and had clicked someone could claim me as a dependent (also thinking my father might have potentially claimed me but he didn't). Do you think me filing as an independent is making this pop up?

I answered in another message but my mother has not paid any of my bills and she is legally divorced from my father. I did not live with either of my parents throughout the past 5 years and i made almost 8k last year and put that on my original tax return.
