I accidentally posted my payment for my tax return twice. How can I reverse the 2nd duplicate payment?

I paid my federal tax balance twice and I'm wondering how I can reverse the 2nd payment.
I've already contacted the IRS, however they are not able to see the 2nd payment.

How did you make the payment?

If the IRS gets both payments then they will refund one of them to you.

It was a direct debit from my checking account. The IRS sees the first payment only.

I see both payments posted to the same IRS account from my checking account, however when I contacted the IRS today, they are only able to see the first payment.

@lilliemay96 You can view your payments through this link. If you don't already have an account, you can create one. https://www.irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account

Once you know what is scheduled, contact the IRS at 800-829-1040.
