Check your forms. Your California Earned Income Tax Credit will be on line 75 of CA 540. Your return will also have Form 3514.

Last, TurboTax will ask you EIC questions in the California section and show you the amount of your state EIC on the screen You’re getting the California Earned Income Tax Credit!

You may qualify for CalEITC if:

  • You’re at least 18 years old or have a qualifying child
  • You have earned income within certain limits

The amount of CalEITC you may get depends on your income and family size.

You must:

  • Have taxable earned income
  • Have a valid social security number or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) for you, your spouse, and any qualifying children
  • Not use “married/RDP filing separate” if married
  • Live in California for more than half the year

My son does not meet maximum income for EITC as single tax filer, yet Turbo Tax shows $48 on line 75.  I also do not see form 3514 completed.  He did his taxes on CalFile and no EITC was shown.  Wondering if Turbo Tax miscalculated and he should not show EITC on California 540 return.

How can we check Turbo Taxes logic to see if he qualifies for EITC?

TurboTax uses the State of California's requirements for CalEITC in its California program.

According to the California Earned Income Tax Credit and Young Child Tax Credit page, to qualify for CalEITC, a taxpayer must:

  • Have taxable earned income
  • Have a valid social security number or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) for you, your spouse, and any qualifying children
  • Not use “married/RDP filing separate” if married
  • Live in California for more than half the year

Earned income can be from:

  • W-2 wages
  • Self-employment
  • Salaries, tips
  • Other employee wages subject to California withholding

You can see the computation in 2020 Instructions for Form FTB 3514.
