How is someone supposed to know if they should amend a return that they have filed themselves?

I filed my own taxes for the very first time last year and I feel I screwed something up and regret not letting a professional go ahead and take care of it and now i'm worried I messed something up and am missing out on some money from the return.

If you feel you did something incorrect going into a local tax office for a review is probably a good idea ... print a paper copy and take it with you ... H&R Block used to do free reviews.

probably millions of persons miss out on tax breaks they are not aware of.

Your tax software is supposed to be on the lookout for that for your benefit.

If you complete each and every screen in the program correctly then the program should bring all things you are eligible for to your attention.  However if you skip sections things can be missed and the program is not responsible for user errors.
