How do I amend my federal return for the second time? When I ask to amend it does not replace the original column with the first amendment and the change column is a total of the two amendments. Is there a place to lock in the numbers after the first amendment and then calculate the change column?
Since you are using the downloaded/CD version you can switch to the FORMS mode and make entries directly on the form 1040X or just print a blank and fill it all in yourself since the form must be mailed in the end.
Use the IRS fill in form if you think it will be easier : <a href="http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf</a>
Since you are using the CD or download TurboTax software, first save a copy of your tax return with the first amended return using a different file name, so you don't take a chance of messing up the original file. Open the new copy, go to forms mode, and delete Form 1040X. That will leave you with a dummy 1040 "original" return that includes the changes from the first amended return. Then go back to the Step-by-Step interview and start the amend process over again. The new Form 1040X will then have the figures from the first amended return in column A, and column B with show only the changes from the first amended return to the second.
You indicated that you are using TurboTax Home & Business in Windows, but you posted your question from a Mac. If you need further help or have more questions, please clarify what environment you are working in, which edition of TurboTax you are using (Deluxe, Premier, etc.), and whether you are using TurboTax Online or the CD or download TurboTax software.
I am using TurboTax Online and tried to do a second amendment. After making the second set of W-2c changes I got to the File part but the online version would take me no further, so I had to jump to the Print Center and download the updated PDFs. This 'seemed' to work, though I am unsure if the incremental taxes I have to pay were correctly calculated with this method. I already paid some incremental taxes with the first W-2c and I am hoping I am not ending up double-paying. Any way for me to confirm?
