How do I "return to Interview" to change an answer?

Dawn - just to close the loop on this, I ended up needing a service code to upgrade without cost in order to delete the form. There was no other workaround unfortunately. It was an issue with 2555-T that was generated but not needed and unable to be deleted without upgrading. Thanks for your help today!

If you have not filed, here are the steps:

  • Sign back into the account, select Pick up where you left off
  • Locate the section where you want to edit the information

If you have filed, you might need to amend.

Unfortunately this is not working. I cannot find where to go back to specifically change my answer to whether I might have foreign earned income. Appreciate any help where to locate this! It will not let me submit my taxes without addressing this. Something I clicked in the very first set of questions created a form for foreign earned income that cannot be removed/adjusted without "Returning to the Interview" but there is no button or link for this.

Thanks!

Kate

What happens is it wants me to upgrade to Deluxe, and I mark that it does not apply to me, but it does not let me remove the form, and so I cannot complete filing my taxes.

If you do not have any foreign income, do a search for foreign income and then click on the Jump to foreign income link and change your answer to NO.

The upgrade request may be for something else, though.  Review the FAQ below.

TurboTax Free Edition (and TurboTax Live Basic) are intended for taxpayers with very simple returns that can fit on the new 1040 form without any schedules. For 2020 returns, we've included unemployment income in TurboTax Free Edition.

If we detect that your tax situation requires expanded coverage, like deductions for owning a home or self-employment income, we'll prompt you to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return.

Depending on what your tax situation was last year, you might need to use new tax forms to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of income. Some of the situations that are now in TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in Free Edition, include:

Hi, this is exactly what I've done, jumped to foreign income section and marked "This doesn't apply to me." It then redirects to a page that says "OK, we’ll remind you to upgrade later" and does not remove the foreign income form or change my answer to align with the fact that I do not have foreign income.

When you use the link, the question is a YES or NO question.   You also need to delete Form 2555-T.

Thanks Dawn! what I can't figure out is how to get to that YES/NO answer. This is different from what it is showing me when I jump to Foreign Income.

Also, that a form is not on the list of forms I have the option to delete.

Then where are you seeing the foreign income on your tax return?

It would be on Schedule 1 Line 8 with Form 2555 entered on line 8 with an amount.  This amount would flow to the Form 1040 Line 8

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

It is the Schedule B that is requiring the upgrade, not the foreign income.

Use Schedule B (Form 1040) if any of the following applies:

  • You had over $1,500 of taxable interest or ordinary dividends.
  • You received interest from a seller-financed mortgage and the buyer used the property as a personal residence.
  • You have accrued interest from a bond.
  • You are reporting original issue discount (OID) in an amount less than the amount shown on Form 1099-OID.
  • You are reducing your interest income on a bond by the amount of amortizable bond premium.
  • You are claiming the exclusion of interest from series EE or I U.S. savings bonds issued after 1989.
  • You received interest or ordinary dividends as a nominee.
  • You had a financial interest in, or signature authority over, a financial account in a foreign country or you received a distribution from, or were a grantor of, or transferor to, a foreign trust. Part III of the schedule has questions about foreign accounts and trusts.

You can try Free File, which is the TurboTax IRS FREE product.   If you qualify, there are no upgrades, all forms are included.

It's only showing up when I run the final check pre-filing federal taxes, and it says the following message copied below. And I cannot "return to Interview" to change my response.

Form 2555-T: Total Foreign Earned Income has a value for foreign earned income but dates for the foreign earned income exclusion aren't entered. Form 2555 must be completed including dates for bona fide residence or physical presence for the foreign earned income exclusion to calculate. To complete Form 2555, or to remove indicators that foreign earned income qualifies for exclusion on Form 2555 either on a W-2 or as Other Income on your return, return to Interview and search for 'foreign income'.

Thanks! I do not believe it is using this form because my dividends are lower than $1,500.

@DawnC may have a better recommendation but I suggest that you clear the tax return and start over.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2020 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

Unfortunately this issue only came up in the very last stage of filing, so I have already paid and cannot clear & restart.

If you are in the Review, can you click on Federal in the left menu to get back to the interview?    Are there any foreign dividends on your 1099s?   The foreign income could be coming from there...

Hi Dawn, thanks so much for the quick responses, so appreciated! When I click Federal I just can't find the question about foreign income where I can mark NO. I can go through the questions under tax breaks and deductions, but there are no questions presented under wages & income. Do you have any instructions how exactly to find that question? The "jump to" is taking me to a page that just wants me to upgrade when I click the answer that it is not relevant for me.

Did you use the search feature up in the right hand corner?   If you type foreign income into the search box and hit enter, you should get a link that you can click on to take you right there.  Did you check the 1099s to see if the foreign income is coming from there?

I don't think you need to get to that question however, because I think the foreign income is coming from somewhere else, although I can't be sure.   Did you see my link about FREE FILE?   Do you qualify for that?

Hi Dawn, Yes I used the search feature, typed foreign income, and it takes me to the page but this is what it takes me to:

And when I click "this doesn't apply to me", it takes me to:

I do not qualify for FREE FILE.

There is no foreign income from my 1099s (and they're the same I file every year).

Thanks!

And make sure you review your 1099 entries.  If you made a typo on an amount, it could generate the Schedule B in error.

Thanks, I've reviewed, and it also imported directly from my brokerage account.

I really think your 1099s have some foreign income on them and that is why you are getting the upgrade message.   Print or preview your return and look at your Schedule B.   You said you had less than $1500 in int and div, but TurboTax has generated the Schedule B because of something on those imported forms.    Do you qualify for FREE FILE?

The Schedule B will generate with any of the following and you have to upgrade to Deluxe to file Schedule B.
