How do I know that the letter I received in the mail is from the IRS to verify my ID?

The question is because when I called I think the information they requested was outside there required tax questions.

1. They asked my birthday

2. Asked where I was born

3. My bank routing #

4. Mothers maiden name

These to me are not a required tax ID verification question

@djdubuque Was it a 4883C letter and what phone number did the letter ask you to call? If not a 4883c letter, you can find the notice (CP) or letter (LTR) number on either the top or the bottom right-hand corner of your correspondence.
