How do I edit my answer to Form 2555 Line 15c? I answered yes to "Did your visa limit the length of your stay or employment...?". I need to change this and cannot go back

My visa is 5 years long but technically it has not limited the length of my stay or employment because I will renew it before it expires. TurboTax won't ask me the question again for me to change my answer. I don't want to have to edit the PDF of my return (it has not been mailed or filed yet).

@kh23 , please tell me a little bit more :

(a) you a US person   ( citizen/GreenCard )?

(b) are you employed by a local entity  or self-employed?

(c) For physical presence test  -- when did start your tax home in foreign country ?  Which country ?  Is 2024 your first year  taking advantage of  FEIE  ( Foreign Earned Income Exclusion} ?

(d) Are you still outside the US or have returned  ( and if so when did you return back to US )?

I ask these to understand the extent of the situation.  Also I note that for form 2555 line  15c  all it requires is a yes no answer .  Generally  the filing should not care about  except for the case where  you are prevented/limited  from completing a 12 month test period that  encompasses the  earned income period.   Therefore , my questions.  Also note that if your visa  expires  next year ( mid 2025 say ) , for 2024  you are not limited, even though  you have no idea if the visa can be renewed  post the expiration date.

Does this make sense ?

Please answer my questions  and I will circle back once I hear from you --yes?

Is there more I can do for you ?

If you use Turbo Tax software, you can go directly to form 2555 and change the answer in line 15C. if you are using the online version, I would suggest that you delete the 2555 and start over so you will be asked the question again.

To delete.

  • Go to tax tools
  • Tools
  • Delete a form
  • delete all forms pertain to Form 2555.

Now reenter the information by going to:

  1. Click on Federal
  2. Click on Wages and Income
  3. Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  4. Scroll down to Less Common Income
  5. On Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion, click on the start or update button
