How do I amend my state return from standard to itemized deduction? I clicked yes to itemize for state return (MT) but it doesn't apply; info is in federal to pull from.

I am using standard deduction for federal return, but would like to use itemized deduction for state return. Does not appear to process and at the end during review it shows standard deduction amount still (standard is 10,180 for state; my itemized deductions are more than that. So, not sure what is happening). Am I missing a step after I click yes and then click done on the next screen? Do I need to click itemized deductions option for federal for it to work? I've tried that and didn't have much success either though. Would appreciate some step-by-step instructions.. I've went through the process multiple times trying so feeling a bit frazzled at this point. 🙂 Thank you.

To clarify, what state are you working in?

Did you already file your returns because there is an option in your montana return that asks if you wish to itemize your deductions. To claim;

  1.  You first must enter your itemized deductions in your federal return. Don't worry if it tells in the end that the standard deduction is right for you because you are only doing this so you can claim these on your Montana return.
  2. Now,  go to the state tab section in your return.  Scroll through the interview questions until you reach a screen asking if you wish to take itemized deductions. Here you will say yes and the federal itemized deductions you entered will populate into your Montana return.
  3. Now your itemized deduction amounts, including state taxes that were withheld from your W2 will now appear on line 15 in Form 2.

If you have already filed and need to amend.

  1. Log into Turbo Tax
  2. Go to My Tax Returns and Documents
  3. Select year 2022
  4. Select amend/change 2022

After going through the preliminary information and you are back into your return, perform steps 1 &2. After everything is done, you will need to print and mail your Montana amended return. Do not attempt to efile your federal return nor print and mail the amendment even though itemized deductions were reported in the return.
