How do I amend my 2023 return that has been accepted already?

I need to add another W-2 to my return that has been accepted

WAIT for the return to be fully processed.   THEN prepare and file an amended return to add the W-2.   Maybe while you are waiting some more tax documents you need will drift in.

1. How will you know if your return has been processed? If you are expecting a refund, and you get it, your return has been processed. Ditto if you owe money and your check was cashed or your direct debit was executed, then your return has been processed.

2. When you are ready to amend, please review "How do I amend my federal tax return for this year?"

There used to be a button/link on the efile page in turbo tax that asked if you wanted to amend it. For the Home Business 2023 version, I see no direct link or option to amend the form. It has been efiled and accepted. Do I have to create my own 1040X and fill it in manually? Doesn't the program walk me through it anymore? If there is a link to 'amend' could someone please spell out where to find it? I do not see it.

To amend your return please use this process.

If you want to make changes, or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
    • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
    • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Sign in to TurboTax

  1. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and
  2. select the year you want to amend
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then
  4. Amend using TurboTax Online
    1. If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead.
  5. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue.
  6. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change.
  7. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.

The option is there, just not where you are looking for it.

On the start/splash page of the downloaded version you will find "Continue Your 2023 Tax Return" and then your returns listed on tiles.

Below that there are options in blue to start a new return or continue from online.

Below that there are grey buttons where the amend a return is available.

If your return has already been opened, you will not be able to find these buttons; close your return and the splash page will appear.

I have the Home & Business Desktop program.  To amend........

Did you do the original return in the Desktop program?  You start by just opening your return as usual. Go up to File-Open.  You need to have the .taxyyyy file on your computer.

Also you first need to check the filing status inside the program so it knows it was filed and accepted.  Open your return and go up to the top black menu bar first item

File > Electronic Filing > Check Electronic Filing Status

Then save your return and close it.  Close the program and reopen it.

If you don't see a button for Need to Amend a Filed Return? on your home screen then you can get to it here. Go to:
Federal Taxes -or- Personal (for H&B)
Other Tax Situations
last section, Other Tax Forms
Amend A Return - Click the Start or Update button
