How can I cancel/undo a submitted amended return?

Cancel a submitted amended return?

Hi! I amended my returns for 2020 and submitted so there is no option to cancel it, but I realized my original one was already correct. I filed on Turbotax online.

You amended 2020?   When?   It is no longer possible to e-file an amended 2020 return.   Only an amended 2021 return can be e-filed.  So unless you e-filed the amended 2020 return before they closed e-filing for 2020, it did not go anywhere.   If you mailed the amended 2020 return, that is a different situation.

There is no way to "un-do" or get back a tax return if you e-filed it and it was accepted.   Sorry.   That is just like putting it in a U.S. mailbox on the corner.   You cannot get it back.   If your amended return is wrong, the IRS will eventually figure that out and will not give you any additional refund for that amended return.   But it takes months for the IRS to process amended returns, so you are not going to hear or see anything about it for six months--probably a lot longer.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

@abl_146 It is not possible to e-file an amended 2020 return.   So if you tried to do that, it did not go through.

You will have to wait to see if IRS agrees that your original return was correct (why would they?)

if the return 1040-X is approved then you have to send amendment No.2 to reverse the change you submitted on Amendment No.1.

By that time you may have found other errors in your tax return.

Thank you for your reply.

I submitted it yesterday. So did it not go through? So I don't need to do anything to undo it?
