Hi there, Filed an amended 2019 return Jan 21st 2020, mailed to IRS. It's now 21 weeks later, and using the tool "Where's My Return" doesn't show anything.

It's been 21 weeks, and tried calling IRS, through a maze of automation, only to get automated answer that they are too busy to answer, and it hangs up.
Any other options other than trying to go somewhere in person?

Sorry but in normal times amended returns can take 4 to 6 months but we are not in normal times so expect a prior year amended return to take much longer.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:
