Did you click that you wanted to apply your 2016 refund to your 2017 state income tax?

Have you e-filed your return?

If you have, you need to wait and see if your return is rejected.

If it is rejected, work through the state return until you come to the screen titled, "(State) Overpayment to Credit to 2016 Tax."  When you are asked if you want to apply your refund, answer No.  Don’t forget to correct the rejection error!

If your return is accepted, wait about a week after you were notified your e-file was accepted.  Then you can visit your local office in DesMoines at the address below:

Hoover State Office Building - 4th Floor
1305 E. Walnut
Des Moines, IA 50319

OR

You can call at

Customer Service Telephone Number

515-281-3114 or 800-367-3388
8 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. CT

You should explain that you want your refund in the current year.  They will have to mail you a check.
