Has anyone experienced TT reporting incorrect original 1040 amts when preparing a 1040x? Found out thru IRS 1040x filed had the wrong original amts!

I filed an amendment to my 2019 taxes and the 1040x summary showing changes had the wrong original amounts. Didn’t know this until I received a letter from IRS telling me I had a balance due with interest! I reviewed my 1040x and all the supporting documents and updated 1040 form is correct. I went back and checked the original TT file that I used to create my amendment and it matched my original 1040 filing. Has anyone experienced TT reporting erroneous original 1040 amounts on an amended return?

If you did your original return with TurboTax, you would have to select the return you want to amend.

  • TurboTax Desktop will have a button at the bottom of the screen to select 'Amend a Filed Return'
  • TurboTax Online  you must scroll down to 'Your tax return & documents' (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.

If these steps are completed correctly the original column figures will be in place.

If you did not do your return originally in TurboTax, you must create the return as it was filed, then close/save it.  Sign back in to select the amendment options noted above.

If those steps were not followed, then the original column figures may not populate correctly.
