Got letter from IL state to verify property tax pd in 2018. Forgot I prepaid 1 pmt in 2017 so overstated 2018 prop amt by ~2K. Do I need to file an amended IRS return?

NO ... at this time simply send them the proof of the payments you did make and a note explaining why the amount is different than reported on your return ... they will automatically adjust the return.
