Form 1099R from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)

I have been using TurboTax for many many years.  I live in New York City.  When I was working, I would notice a copy of my W-2 in the information compiled by TurboTax.

For many years, I have been using e-file.  However, every year I get a letter from the IRS requesting verification of the information I submitted.  I received a letter today.   I am requested to verify what I submitted so I send them a copy of my 1099R (Office of Personnel Management).  I receive a Federal Annuity.  But why do I have to do this every year?

Can TurboTax prepare a copy of my 1099R and submit it to the IRS when I e-file, like you did with my W-2 when I was working?  If the IRS has this information, there would be no reason for them to contact me yearly.

If you can't do what I described above, can you ask me to UPLOAD a copy of the 1099R BEFORE I send it to the IRS via e-file so that the IRS will have a copy of the 1099R and won't have to contact me?

Not having the 1099R delays my refund EVERY year.

This can only be answered by the IRS. It's unusual.

When asked for SSN do nothing it will ask twice

You should then be transferred to an agent, but there is likely to be a long wait.

Turbotax and other apps do not have the ability to send unrequired documents the info on the w-2 is required. most of the info on the 1099-R is not. so even if it was transmitted there would be no way for the IRS computers to identify the document.

can't be done. you would have to mail your return with the 1099R

as stated call the IRS to find out what the issue is. if you've been correctly entering the 1099R in Turbotax that's all that should be required. the same as for millions of other filers.

You are correct that you should not have to do this every year. However, TurboTax can't add an image of your 1099-R form to your return when you e-file.

There are very strict guidelines about what is contained in an e-file and an image of the 1099-R is not something that can be added to your e-file.

Before when you had a W-2 form, we didn't submit an image of your W2 form, just the information that was entered or imported into the program.

If the IRS continues to do this every year, you may want to contact the Taxpayer Advocate to see if they can find out why this is happening to you.

One thing to check into though...

The retirement form from the OPM is a CSA-1099-R and not a simple 1099-R.

When you entered the form into the software, make sure you entered it as that sub-form type.

_____________

The man form from OPM strangely shows it as 1099-R in big bold print at the top of the form....but the squint print on the left side properly identifies it as a CSA-1099-R.

But maybe you've been doing that already
