filing 2024 taxes

My son filed his taxes for the 2024 season. They were accepted by the irs already. He worked in early 2024 at another job for about 3 weeks before working were he does now, and he forgot about that job. The job sent him his w-2 for filing, so what happens now? Should he hold on to the w-2 and file it next year?

No.  He cannot put a 2024 W-2 on a 2025 tax return next year.   After his return is fully processed, he will need to amend the return to add the 2024 W-2 he just received.   That will be done on a Form 1040X, which becomes available later in February.

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-a...

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

Thank you for your response. Another question is when he does amend the taxes, is that also due by the April deadline, or does he have until October?

The IRS limits the amount of time you have to file an amended return to claim a refund to:

  • within three years from the original filing deadline
  • within two years of paying the tax due for that year, if that date is later

However, If amending your tax return results in a higher tax bill, you will need to make an additional tax payment by April deadline to avoid any penalty and interest.
