Filed on February 2019- return was accepted. Called the IRS in March- 45 day hold. Called in May (60 days later) sent referral which could take 60 days?!? Frustrated!

I filed in February 2019. Both federal and state returns were accepted. I waited a month and called in March. I was told I was placed on a 45 day hold starting 3/25 and not to contact the IRS again until May. I waited until May and called again last week to get an update. The lady told me I was actually at my 60th day (um what?) and that she needed to submit a referral which could take up to another 60 days  I check the IRS Go app every morning as it says they update it every 24 hours but I am beyond frustrated. There are people like me who use their tax money to pay off some debt and get ahead before the holidays. My family depends on that money. Anyone have any advice?

Try the Tax Advocate:

https://www.irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate

And consider changing your withholding so that you do not have to go through this again next year.

I will definitely look into this! Thank you so much. I’ve already done that. I was working for a local family owned residential trash service company so our check were hand written. The owner was taking my taxes out weekly but was never processing it through our payroll system and unfortunately when I filed I didn’t realize it until the state contacted me and told me about it. This is such a mess.
