Filed initial return 26 Jan 2023 (owing $1,486) and it was accepted. Amended the return 17 Feb 2023 (Refund of $1,098) and it was accepted. I am unable to get a status.

IRS site rejects the inquiry because initial return owed tax. Even entering the amended details that resulted in a refund won't provide a status.

You should have waited for the original return to be fully processed before you amended.  Amending too soon can lead to confusion and delays.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  It can take four to six months  -- or more-- to receive a refund from an amended tax return.

Just checking.  Did you pay the first tax due?

The amended return will only be the difference you get back or need to pay. You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 21 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  So if you have an amount on line 16 you need to have paid that.   If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

Ignore any 1040V voucher that prints out and the new 1040. Those are what your return would have been if you had not needed to amend.
