Does turbotax take out the money from your refund to pay your state what you owe or do you have to pay it some other way yourself?

You have to pay it yourself.

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

I owe on my state, TurboTax asked me for payment info and payment date. So do i need to go thru the States website to make payment or does Turboxtax take it out? I do not want to pay double.

You must go through your state website.

Taxes owed cannot be paid from a tax refund, federal or state.

However, if you entered bank information for the state taxes owed so that it would be debited from your account then the bank information is sent with your state tax return and the state will debit your account.

If this is what you entered then there is no need to go to the state website to pay the taxes.

Is there anyway of changing the amount or pay date after its been filed? So i can go thru the state website and make payments. Turbotax did not give me any options and made me enter specifics to move forward.

For that you would need to contact your state through their website to see if you can cancel the payment.  If the payment can be canceled then you can use the state payment website for a payment and a new payment date.

Thank you for your help, have already contacted them, They gave me the same answer and said TurboTax is seperate. Said she believes they wont take it out but isn't sure. So stuck in a limbo of maybe my taxes will be late because im not sure if Turbo Is going to take them out or not and don't want to Double pay. Tax Comission isnt the best about refunding over payment.  Either way not getting a direcnt response from either. Also it shows payment couplins on the return so does that mean they set up for payments then?

The Form 1040-ES payment forms would be for Federal estimated tax payments for tax year 2022 if you choose to use them.  Is there a state payment form?  If so, what is the form number and state?

If your state supports electronic withdrawal ( evidently it does )

and you entered your bank info for your state return, then it will be paid.

The info went to your state department of revenue.

The 4 slips are probably for federal or state estimated payments.

The 1040ES are estimates for next year. The 1040ES quarterly estimated tax payments DO NOT get sent to the IRS or state with your return. They are optional to pay. Turbo Tax is very conservative and doesn't want you to owe too much next year. They might have printed out if you got a one time large income this year. Like if you took a IRA or 401K distribution. You can ignore them. You might want to adjust your withholding at work so you won't owe too much next year.

@cmackay11

If you owe state taxes and were able to set up a direct debit, the money will be withdrawn from your bank account on the date you specified.

I did the same thing and I scheduled it to come out 4/15 and it is now 4/18 and it still hasn't come out and theres no way to double check when, where, or how the payment was made. I don't want my taxes to be late but I also don't want to go on my states website and pay it there if its supposed to be done by TurboTax and pay twice.

The 15th was on a weekend, so this can cause it to take extra time to process. Do not log on and make an additional payment. It would be best to contact the IRS here to see if the payment is pending. @tmoorejr

How can I find out if my state is going to take the amount I owe out of my bank account today?  I thought that I had specified a deduction from my bank account for both federal and state, but only the IRS (federal) deducted any money from my bank account today.  I don't want to pay double, and I also don't want to get in trouble with the state.  Is there somewhere in TurboTax where this information is kept?

There may be a delay due to the volume of processing.  To verify your payment information, please follow these steps to print or view your TurboTax Electronic Filing Instructions Page.

The banking and withdrawal information can also be printed/viewed on your Federal Information Worksheet Part V, and the State Information Worksheet, Part VI.

Follow these steps to view/print your instruction page:

·         Sign back into your TurboTax online account

·         Scroll down and click "Add a State"  (This is just a way to get you back into your tax return)

·         Next select "Tax Tools" (left column) and then "Print Center"

·         Select "Print, save, or preview this year's return"

·         Check the boxes for your Federal and State returns (this will open further options)

·         Choose to include the government and TurboTax worksheets

·         Then click "View or Print Forms".
