Do I need to amend?

I collected partial unemployment during this last tax year. I filed my taxes before the new stimulus bill was signed into law by Biden and made $10,200 of unemployment income tax free. I claimed the Additional Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit when I originally filed. Do I have to file an amended return to get the refund for the unemployment tax change or will the IRS automatically do this for me?

If you are eligible the IRS will calculate the refund for you and send you the refund based on the unemployment compensation exclusion.

Go to this IRS website for information - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-sending-more-than-2-point-8-million-refunds-to-those-who-already-paid-taxes-on-2020-unemployment-compensation

Yes. Maryland recommends amending your return to claim the $10,200 unemployment adjustment. Sign in to TurboTax to file Form 502X, Maryland Amended Tax. See the Comptroller of Maryland news release for more information.
