I received unemployment benefits but ended up having to pay back a portion of it due to being overpaid. Do I claim that full amount or am I meant to subtract what I paid from that initial total?
You enter the full amount of the unemployment compensation received. Then you enter the amount of the unemployment compensation you paid back.
Enter unemployment compensation in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to unemployment compensation
If you had taxes withheld from the unemployment compensation -
On the screen What's the total amount you received on your 1099-G? check the box Federal or state income tax was withheld on this payment.

Did you repay it in 2020 or in 2021? If you repaid it in 2020, follow DoninGA's instructions. If you repaid it in 2021, report the full amount as shown on your 1099-G on your 2020 tax return. You will deal with the repayment on your 2021 tax return that you file next year.
