Didn't file 1098-T but realized tuition reimbursement was on W-2 wages

I didn't file my 1098-t because I was below taxable threshold and figured I wouldn't qualify for any credits since my tuition was reimbursed by my employer. However, I have since realized my employer puts tuition reimbursement in wages in w-2. So it seems maybe it was meant for me to file the 1098-t or else those wages are not being offset. Should I file amended?

The other question I have is how is it possible that the tuition is in wages if the first $5k or so  is supposed to not be taxable.

Check with your employer to see how much they added to your W-2 box1.

If your employer pays more than $5,250 for educational benefits for you during the year, you must generally pay tax on the amount over $5,250. Your employer should include in your wages (Form W-2, box 1) the amount that you must include in income.

If your reimbursement is included in your taxable income, then you are eligible to claim the education credit.

If the employer added to box1 the difference between your tuition bill and the $5250 tax-free, the difference is what you can use to claim tax credits.
