Deferring payment via government relief due to COVID-19

Hello,

Just watched today's press conference. Mnuchin just said tax payments can be deferred for 90 days, tax and penalty free. I've already filed--how do I sign up for this deferrment?

Currently, there is no way to enter a payment date after 4/15 in TurboTax, nor is there a way to change your direct debit date. When there is, an announcement will be made. TurboTax is currently working on it.

Please see the TurboTax Help links, listed below, to learn more.

I too wish to take advantage of the new 90 day tax payment deferral.  Please send an announcement to all Turbotax users as soon as this is available.  Thank you!!

You are unable to change your payment date in TurboTax once you have filed your return and it has been accepted but you can cancel it and then make other payment arrangements with the IRS.

Federal Tax direct debit payments can be cancelled up to 48 hours (midnight, Eastern time) before the date you designated the funds to be debited. To cancel your direct debit transaction, call (888) 353-4537. Please wait 7-10 days after your return was accepted before calling.

State: For your State direct debit payment you will need to contact your State directly to see if they can change the date or cancel the transaction. Each state is different and you can find the contact information for your State by using this link:

I have filed my tax return showing money due IRS that I indicated I would pay on April 10.  How do I defer payment for 90 days due to coronavirus?

You will have to cancel the payment and then pay the federal taxes owed on the IRS payment website on or before July 15, 2020.

IRS website for information on canceling a direct debit payment -https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

Go to this IRS payment website and choose Direct Pay - https://www.irs.gov/payments

The TurboTax account fees either have to paid by credit card or if you have a federal tax refund can be paid from the federal tax refund before you can file your tax return.

If you have federal taxes owed then you can wait to file the tax return and pay the taxes owed on or before July 15, 2020.
